Task 1
  1. Is the term, Paddy Wagon, an Irish Racial Slur?
  2. What makes a slur racist or prejudiced? Does it depend on who says it? Or does it depend on who it's being said to?
  3. Does the term show Nativism against the Irish today? Why/Why Not?

1. The term Paddy Wagon is not an Irish Racial Slur because it's just a term the Irish use for the vehicle that haul away criminals. There's nothing wrong with that. (It is an Irish Slur because it can be offensive to Irish)
2. One thing that makes a slur racist is when for example black people are called niggers. Nigger is the bad way of calling someone black and some people take that offensive. I think it doesn't matter one who is saying it butit depends on who it is being said to. (Discriminating a person by their race)
3. I don't think it does show nativism today because back then people did take it offensive but now today people don't really use those types of words maybe in Irish countries it would be offensive or it can be a joke.

1. The author's point of view is to show that not only Irish men also Irish women have the right to defend for who they are.
2. This source does show Nativism
  • she looks as if a weight has just been lifted off of her shoulders and for once in her life she has the right to stand up for what she believes in which is that every Irishman has the right to stand up for what they believe in and that everyone is treated equally no matter what.
  • the other woman is just standing there and it looks as if she wants the woman with her hand in the air to quiet down because maybe the woman telling her to be quiet is scared that someone will hear her and that she will get into trouble for standing up for what she believes in.
  • all Irishmen think that they do not got a chance at becoming who they are and she has decided to put her foot down and to stand up for what she believes in.
